9 Inch Pizza Plates and Bagasse Pizza Boards: A Sourcing Guide for US and Canadian Distributors

Pizzerias, slice shops and event caterers in North America order nine-inch pizza plates in high volume, and many distributors report the same problem: standard paper plates warp under a hot slice, while foam options face bans in more states every year. Bagasse pizza boards and plates are the alternative most buyers move to, but the size terminology causes real confusion between a 9 inch round plate, a 9 x 9 square board and a compartmented pizza tray. This guide explains what the specifications actually mean, which certification documents to request, and how to order them from a molded fiber factory without guessing.

Why 9 inch is the standard pizza slice size

A 9 inch round plate fits a single slice cut from a 16 to 18 inch pizza, which covers most delivery and slice-shop formats in the US and Canada. Some operators prefer a 9 x 9 square board for thicker Sicilian or Detroit-style slices, and a small number use compartmented trays when the slice is served with sides. When you send an RFQ, state the outside diameter in inches, the wall height, and whether the plate needs a grease-resistant coating, because each of these changes the mold, the price and the lead time.

Bagasse pizza plates vs paper plates vs foam

The three materials behave differently under a hot, oily slice, and the difference matters more than the unit price.

Paper plates are cheap and light, but a 9 inch paper plate softens quickly when the pizza oil soaks through, and the plate can fold when carried. Foam plates hold heat well and are inexpensive, but they are being restricted by state laws and many foodservice distributors now refuse to stock them. Bagasse plates are pressed from sugarcane fiber with heat and pressure, which gives them a rigid rim, no wax coating and a surface that holds up to hot, oily food for the time a customer needs.

What to check in the specification sheet

Before you compare quotes, ask for these five items on any 9 inch bagasse pizza plate:

  • Outside diameter and wall height. A 9 inch plate is not always 9 inches across; some molds produce 8.9 to 9.1 inch plates. Confirm the exact dimension in the specification sheet.
  • Unit weight. Lighter plates (10-15 g) are fine for cold or light use; slice shops usually choose 18-25 g plates so the plate does not flex under a loaded slice.
  • Grease resistance. Bagasse is naturally oil-resistant up to a point. If the pizza is oily, request the coating option (PULP coating) or confirm the fiber density is enough for your application.
  • Microwave and heat tolerance. Bagasse plates are molded at high temperature and are microwave-safe for reheating. Confirm the stated temperature range in the spec sheet.
  • Certification documents. For the US market, request the FDA food-contact statement; for compostability claims, check the BPI directory listing for the specific product.

How to verify the supplier

A factory can claim almost anything on a sales page, so verify before you commit:

1. Check the BPI certified product directory at products.bpiworld.org. If the company and product are not listed, there is no independent compostability verification.

2. Request the FDA food contact documentation that matches the exact SKU, not a generic company certificate.

3. Ask for a pre-production sample and test it with a real hot slice: place it on a plate warmer or in a microwave for 30 seconds and check for warping and soak-through.

4. Confirm the carton dimensions and container loading yourself with the packing data, especially for 40HQ quotes.

MOQ and lead time expectations

For standard molded fiber products with existing molds, factories usually quote from one carton quantity upward, and the MOQ depends on the packing size of the specific plate. Custom products that need a new mold follow a different path: mold development takes 20 to 30 working days before production begins, so plan your launch calendar accordingly. Printed plates with a logo add 7 to 15 working days for the printing step.

FAQ

Do I need a special plate for pizza or can I use a regular bagasse plate?

A standard 9 inch round bagasse plate works for a single slice. If you serve thicker square slices, request a 9 x 9 board, and if the slice comes with sides, ask about compartmented trays. The key is matching the plate size and wall height to how the pizza is served.

Are bagasse pizza plates microwave safe?

Yes. Bagasse plates are formed with heat and pressure at high temperature, and they can be used in a microwave for reheating. Confirm the temperature range on the specification sheet for your specific SKU.

Are bagasse pizza plates compostable?

Only if the specific product is certified. Check the BPI directory for the exact product listing, and keep the coating in mind: coated plates may not be accepted by every composting facility, so confirm the certification scope covers the version you are buying.

What is the MOQ for custom printed pizza plates?

Printed products require a higher MOQ than plain products. Send your quantity, print size and artwork requirements to the factory for a quote, because the MOQ depends on both the mold and the printing method.
