How to Verify Bagasse Tableware Supplier Certifications: Official Registries

The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation applies its PFAS restrictions to food-contact packaging from 12 August 2026. California has already banned PFAS in plant-based food packaging from 2028, and more US states are following. In this environment, a certificate is no longer a decorative PDF a supplier sends with a quotation — it is a purchasing condition, and increasingly a customs checkpoint.

The good news for buyers: every major certification can be checked in an official public registry. This guide lists the official verification channels for the certifications that matter in food packaging, explains what each one actually proves, and what documents you should request before placing an order.

2. How to verify a supplier's certificates in 10 minutes

Step 1 — BPI (for US orders). Open products.bpiworld.org, switch the search to "Company", and type the supplier's registered name. The catalog lists every certified item down to the SKU. If the company name returns nothing, ask the supplier for the exact legal name under which the certificate was issued.

Step 2 — OK compost / EN 13432 (for EU orders). Confirm the certificate number with the issuing body (TÜV Austria for OK compost, DIN CERTCO for EN 13432). Both keep public databases of certified products and licence holders.

Step 3 — FDA & LFGB. FDA does not issue "certificates" — compliance is demonstrated through 21 CFR compliance or an FDA Food Contact Substance notification (searchable in the FDA FCS database). LFGB compliance is proven by a test report from an accredited lab; ask for the report number and verify it directly with the lab.

Step 4 — BRCGS & FSC. Search the supplier in the BRCGS directory (site-level certificates) and in the FSC certificate database (company or certificate code). Both are public and updated regularly.

Step 5 — PFAS. A compostability certificate is not a PFAS certificate. For the EU market, ask for a PFAS test report showing compliance with the PPWR limits (25 ppb per targeted PFAS, 250 ppb sum, 50 ppm total fluorine). Ask whether PFAS testing is done per production batch or per product family, and whether the report is issued by an accredited lab.

• PFAS test reports from an accredited laboratory
• Declaration of Conformity (DoC) for the target market
• Food-contact test reports (FDA / LFGB as applicable)
